The iPhone launched in a blaze of publicity. Apple entering the mobile phone market was big news, and since then their marketing machine has been in full flow. But marketing can only get so far, phones always need to have something big to offer, something that makes people want to have it.

And it seems the latest internet craze, Twitter, is also helping drive forward sales of the iPhone. The quirky ‘mini-blogging site’ offers users the chance to broadcast their ‘tweets (140 characters maximum) to any followers they may have.

Celebrities have been jumping on the Twitter band wagon recently, almost every celebrity, from Ashton Kutcher to Tyra Banks, has a Twitter account they use to keep followers updated – and, as with all things celebrity, fans are loving it.

Which is why the iPhone is cashing in. The iPhone has a massive collection of applications that are able to tap into Twitter. For reading and sending tweets, along with various other options such as creating backgrounds.

Many consider the iPhone’s target market to be fashion conscious and gadget loving twenty somethings. Whilst this isn’t strictly accurate, the iPhone is often used as a business tool, as a gaming utility or what have you, it certainly does have that crowd. Twenty-somethings and gadget lovers tend to be ‘first adopters’ of technology and that has proved the case with Twitter.

So those who love gadgets and Twitter then start looking around for a combination of the two – and the iPhone has provided it.

But it is not just about them, Twitter has started catching on in a big way. Because the celebrities are on board it is getting a wider audience, and more people who might not otherwise be interested in such technologies usually sign up because they want to know what the celebrities are saying. Because they sign up to Twitter, and then get hooked, they want to have a way of accessing it more. And the iPhone provides the perfect platform for that.
